What
are "periodicals?"
Periodicals are resources that are published "periodically"
(every day, once a week, once a month, etc.), the most common of which
are newspapers, magazines, and scholarly
journals. So The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, People
Magazine, and The Journal for the Study of Judaism in the Persian,
Hellenistic, and Roman Period are all "periodicals,"
as different as they may be. That is, they are all published "periodically."
How
do I search for articles in periodicals?
To
search for articles in newspapers, magazines, and/or scholarly journals,
start with one of our online databases.
- Click on the
"Search for Articles" link, located on the left side of
the library's homepage, or on the "Databases" link at the
top of the page. Both will take you to a page where you can select
a database that is appropriate for your search.
- Once you've arrived
at the "Databases" page, you can:
| • |
click on
one of the subject area titles to view a list of databases that
are relevant to your research area |
| • |
type a
subject area, type of resource, or name of a given database
into the search box located near the bottom left of the screen. |

Note: You are
not searching for articles on this screen. Rather,
you are searching for an appropriate database that indexes articles
that are the most relevant to your research.
- If you're searching
for news, a good database to try is LexisNexis, which you can access
by typing "LexisNexis" into the "Keyword Search"
box on the Databases page. Click on the appropriate link when it appears,
and you're ready to search!
- If you're looking
for magazine and journal articles, 2 good multi-subject databases
are "Academic Search Premier" from EBSCOHost, and "Research
Library" from Proquest. Type either of these names into the "Keyword
Search" box and then click on the appropriate link when it appears.
Note: both of these databases can also be accessed by clicking on
the "[Multi Subject]" link in the list above the search
box.
How
do I find out whether the library owns a specific periodical?
What do you do if you
| •
|
want
to know whether or not the library owns a specific journal? |
| •
|
have a citation
for an article that you've been told can be found in the library,
but you don't know where it's located? |
To find out whether
the library owns a specific journal/magazine/newspaper, and if it does,
how you can access it, follow these steps.
1. Go to the library
homepage (http://www.westga.edu/~library/)
2. Click on the “Locate Articles” link, found on the left
side of the screen.

3. Type the journal name into the search box and click “Search
for Journal Title.” This first search will tell you which of our
databases contains a full-text, electronic version of the journal.

4. You can also click the “Search 2—Is it on the Shelf?”
link, located in the box at the top left side of the screen to determine
whether Ingram Library owns the print version of the journal.
5. Other search options include looking for the journal in the Georgia
Libraries Journal List (GOLD) and requesting a copy of it via interlibrary
loan.
