Religious Studies - Collection Development Profile
- PURPOSE:

The general purpose of the philosophy collection is to support the
curriculum-related information needs of students and faculty.
- COLLECTION PARAMETERS:
- Language: English
- Date of publication: The emphasis is on current knowledge, especially
in the area of
ethics. Older materials may be purchased for biographical and historical coverage,
as well as to complete coverage of all areas of philosophy and
religion.

- Geographical coverage: International in scope.
- Formats preferred: Monographs and journals. Audiovisual and
electronic resources are
selectively included.
- STATUS OF PROGRAM
- Philosophy is part of the English Department. There are 4 faculty
members and about
15 majors as of September 1999. Degree program is offered in Bachelor of Arts.

Core classes: Critical thinking is included as one of the courses to meet requirement
for Oral Communication in Area B. In Area C two philosophy courses are included:
Introduction to Philosophy and Philosophy and Literature. Students can also receive
a minor in philosophy or religion.

Courses offered: Introduction to Philosophy, Critical Thinking, Introduction to
Ethics, Philosophy and Literature, Ancient and Medieval Philosophy, Modern
Philosophy, American Philosophy, Analytic Philosophy, Symbolic Logic, Existentialism,
Biblical Studies, Christian Theology, Biblical Hermeneutics, Philosophy of
Religion, World Religions, History and Philosophy of Science, Phenomenology,
Philosophical Issues in Criminal Justice, Professional Ethics, and special topics.
- COLLECTING LEVEL - Study or Instructional Support Level

The core collection focuses on areas covered by the curriculum. Peripheral area is
social and political theory.

Collection development responsibility resides with the
Philosophy teachers and chair of the English Department. The Acquisitions librarian,
Instructional Services librarian responsible for the Reference collection, and the
liaison librarian may also select materials needed for the collection.
