Budget Allocation
The department allocation for 2005/2006 is: $1800.00.
Book Requests
All book requests should be submitted via the online form accessible from the Library home
page at http://www.westga.edu/~library/cgi-bin/libfrls1.cgi. Please note that this
is a link to *all* the electronic request forms for faculty, so you must use the drop-down
menu to select Book Purchase under "What type of request do you want to
make?"
The deadline for requesting new books for the current fiscal year is December 16, 2005. Adhering to this date will allow
the Library Acquisitions Department time to notify you of "out of prints" so you can
make alternate selections. Book orders should be placed for 110% of the
Department allocation to cover out of prints and discounts. As I am sure you are aware, book
funds cannot be used for journal requests. In addition, only 20% of the
allocation may be used for AV materials: videos, CDs, DVDs, audio-cassettes, etc.
Please contact me if you feel there are notable gaps in the collection or important
reference sources that we lack. I am always available to discuss your research and teaching
needs to make sure our collection development profile reflects those needs.
Periodical Requests New
periodical subscription requests are due in the Library by September 9, 2005. A subscription request must be
accompanied by a matching subscription cancellation request. There can be no extension of the
journal request/change deadline as our periodical vendors cannot guarantee delivery of the
January 2006 issues if we do not have all orders placed by October 1.
Requests should be made on the Web forms available from the Library home page at
http://www.westga.edu/~library/cgi-bin/libfrls1.cgi. Again, this is a link to *all* the
electronic request forms for faculty, so you must use the drop-down menu to select
Periodical Purchase under "What type of request do you want to make?"
Periodical Use Statistics
The following statistical information, comparing the number of philosophy periodicals in print
format used in the Library during 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005, was
provided to me by the Library Acquisitions Department.

Library Instruction Library
instruction sessions are available to help introduce your students to Library resources and
basic research skills. Information regarding instruction sessions for 1000/2000 level classes
may be found at http://www.westga.edu/~library/depts/li/sessions/ (please note, this page
has not yet been updated for the Fall 2004 semester). Instruction for 3000/4000 level courses
may be arranged through me directly.
Additional information regarding the Library's Instruction Policy is available at http://www.westga.edu/~library/depts/li/policies.shtml.
Putting Materials on Reserve for Your
Classes
Please be aware of the following changes in our policies regarding materials placed on Reserve
for your classes:
- Reserve materials request forms must now be submitted electronically, using the
Library's online form. You can access it from the Library's homepage by clicking on
Requests in the yellow bar at the top of the page, or by using the following link:
http://www.westga.edu/~library/cgi-bin/libfrls1.cgi
Please note that this is a link to *all* the electronic request forms
for faculty, so you must use the drop-down menu to select Reserve Materials
under "What type of request do you want to make?"
If possible, please submit your request form prior to bringing in your materials.
However, if you wish, you can use the computers in the Library to submit the request at
the time you come with your items.
- A new request form must be submitted for each batch of items brought in, even if you
already have some materials on Reserve for that class. Your compliance with this will help us
to minimize processing errors.
- Anything which can be put on electronic Reserves will be; there will no longer be
photocopied articles on Reserve in the building. Students really appreciate the convenience of
online, 24/7 access, and it makes items easily available to those who live far away from
Carrollton.
As ever, you need to allow us up to 3 business days to complete processing (although it
may take less); materials are processed in order of receipt. The earlier you get your
requests in, the better.
- Finally, if you haven't done so already, please review the new BOR Guidelines for
copyright adherence, "Regents Guide to the TEACH Act" http://www.usg.edu/legal/copyright/teach_act.phtml
The Library will, of course, be following these guidelines in our handling of Reserves.
All questions regarding reserves should be directed to the Circulation Department at
839.678.6502.
Library to launch new homepage August 15
The Library has redesigned its home page to make it easier for students and faculty to
locate important information and resources. Over the past year the Library has conducted a
series of usability studies to gauge student and faculty impressions of both the old and new
site. We learned that users want a cleaner, less cluttered page; information and links that
are better organized; and terminology that makes sense to the average user. The home page
redesign is based on this research as well as conversations with librarians and Library staff.
As always, I look forward to working with you during the coming year. If you would like to
meet with me to discuss any of the above items, or anything not mentioned (individually or as
a department), please do not hesitate to contact me.
