SOME INTERNET GENEALOGICAL SITES
These are seven genealogical sites available on the web. For more -- many
more -- sites see Thomas Jay Kemp's VIRTUAL ROOTS (Ref CS 21 .K46 1997).
USGENWEB PROJECT http://www.usgenweb.org
The USGenweb Project is an attempt to provide Internet websites for
genealogical research in every county and every state of the United States. Because
of the voluntary nature of the project, the websites vary in quality and scope. For
instance, some county websites provide links to actual cemetery, marriage, census, or
tax records for that county. Others provide links to genealogical and historical
societies in a particular county. Some counties do not have websites yet.
FAMILYSEARCH http://www.familysearch.org
This Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints database is a combination of
the Ancestral File and the International Genealogical Index (British Isles, North
America, and Finland regions). Many family tree charts and much individual
information is available here. The Social Security Death Index contains birth
and death dates for individuals who died since 1950 and were receiving social
security benefits at the time.
CYNDI'S LIST OF GENEALOGY SITES http://www.CyndisList.com
This is Cyndi Howell's personal selection of genealogical links. It is well
organized and provides access to almost 30,000 websites. These include mailing lists,
ftp sites, family, genealogical, and historical societies and associations, and
family newsletters.
GENEALOGY FORUMS http://www.genforum.com/[surname]
If you want to see if someone else might be researching your particular
family or families, type in this URL with a particular surname following the slash.
Example: www.genforum.com/sutton would give you the Sutton family postings.
ANCESTRY LIBRARY EDITION
Formerly called AncestryPlus, this is a collection of databases, records, and advice on
genealogical research. To get to Ancestry Library Edition go to the Ingram Library
homepage. Under Research choose Search for Articles, then History, then Ancestry
Library Edition. Here you will be able to search the entire database or you may search individual
years of U. S. Census records, immigration records, or the Social Security Death Index as single
sources.
