Internet Resources

General Reference

  • HyperPhysics Chemistry (http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/hbase/hframe.html). Created and maintained by Georgia State University's Dr. Rod Nave, this excellent site covers many aspects of chemistry. Using hyperlinks and informative 'concept cards,' the site presents an innovative and intuitive way to see how all physical science concepts are related.

  • ChemCollective (http://www.chemcollective.org/). Funded by the National Science Foundation through the National Science Digital Library, this website features interactive chemistry tutorials and an excellent online stoichiometry unit. Students and teachers can run experiments in the intricate virtual lab, where users can moniter temperature, molarity, weight, and pH levels.

  • EurekAlert! (http://www.eurekalert.org/). This site "is an electronic index of research advances in science, medicine, health and technology as published in news briefs and in the science media, including peer-reviewed scientific journals. Although underwritten by commercial sponsors, AAAS is responsible for the editorial content.

  • CHEMnetBASE (http://www.chemnetbase.com/). A wealth of chemical information from Chapman & Hall/CRC, now available on the Internet. Chapman & Hall/CRC are publishers of major chemical reference works.

  • Electrochemistry Dictionary (http://electrochem.cwru.edu/ed/dict.htm). This site is hosted by Case Western Reserve University and maintained by Illinois Institute of Technology; the Web master is Zoltan Nagy (Argonne National Laboratory). The dictionary is part of a larger site (http://electrochem.cwru.edu/estir/), which includes a list of resources and an electrochemistry encyclopedia with longer articles about some of the same topics. Navigation is simple; there are many links between related terms, as well as frequent cross-references.

  • IUPAC Nomenclature Home Page (http://www.chem.qmw.ac.uk/iupac/). Devoted to recommendations on organic and biochemical nomenclature, symbols and terminology, this International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry web site provides extensive links to glossaries and standards for naming chemical compounds.

  • EPA Sector Notebooks (http://es.epa.gov/oeca/sector/index.html). The EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance developed this series of profiles or notebooks containing air, water and land pollutant release data on selected major industries. Environmental experts from both inside and outside the EPA have thoroughly reviewed the data.

  • spectroscopyNOW.com A free access spectroscopy portal "that fulfills the information needs of ALL spectroscopists", this site offers a wealth of information, resources and services. Techniques covered include: Mass Spectrometry, X-ray Spectrometry, NMR, Chemometrics, Infrared, Atomic Spectrometry, Raman Spectrometry, Ultraviolet, MRI, and Proteomics.

  • ChemWeb.com (http://www.chemweb.com/). Made available by ChemIndustry.com, Inc., this free site (registration is required) offers fulltext journal articles, forums, news links, and job listings among its many features.

Periodic Tables

  • NIST Periodic Table (http://physics.nist.gov/PhysRefData/Elements/). The National Institute of Standards and Technology created this table, which includes basic properties, spectral wavelengths, isotopes, and radiation data for each element.

  • Chemicool Periodic Table (http://www-tech.mit.edu/Chemicool/). This periodic table has links to information on each of the chemical elements and some simple chemistry calculators.

  • LennTech Periodic Table (http://www.lenntech.com/periodic-chart.htm). This table gives each element's basic chemical properties as well as detailed articles on the element's environmental and health effects.

  • Web Elements (http://www.webelements.com/). This periodic table gives detailed information on each element's physical, chemical, thermodynamic, and electronic properties.

Online Tools

  • Edgar Fahs Smith Collection of Images (http://www.library.upenn.edu/etext/smith/). Over 3,000 images of scientist, laboratories, and scientific apparatus are provided by the University of Pennsylvania Library.

  • 4000 Years of Women in Science (http://www.astr.ua.edu/4000WS/4000WS.html). This University of Alabama resource contains biographical information on women scientists through out history. Chemistry is among the many disciplines covered.

  • Indiana University Molecular Structure Center (http://www.iumsc.indiana.edu/index.html). This site allows users to construct molecules using several model types and also provides the ability to rotate the molecules for views from any angle.

  • Molecular Weight Calculation (http://www.chemie.fu-berlin.de/cgi-bin/molform). Molecular Weight Calculation is a simple calculator for determining the molecular weights of compounds.

  • NIST Chemistry WebBook (http://webbook.nist.gov/). The data collections of the National Institute of Standards and Technology can be accessed at this site. Thermochemical data, reaction thermochemistry data, IR spectra, mass spectra, and UV/Vis spectra data are some of the topics covered.

Internet Directories

  • Academic Info:Chemistry (http://www.academicinfo.net/chem.html). This site provides a large annotated directory of web resources relating to Chemistry and includes indexes, databases, search engines and reference materials.

  • Analytical Chemistry Springboard (http://www.anachem.umu.se/jumpstation.htm). Sponsored by the Analytical Chemistry Department of Umea University in Sweden, this site attempts to provide a comprehensive list of analytical chemistry resources on the Internet.

  • Chemdex.org (http://www.chemdex.org/). With over 7100 links in this international directory of chemistry, this website covers nearly any aspect of chemistry imaginable. The site is maintained by the University of Sheffield in England.
