E-Texts

  • BioText (http://biosearch.berkeley.edu/). The University of California manages this site, which indexes over 150 open access scientific journals available through Pubmed Central. Users can search article abstracts or captions to specific pictures and figures.

  • HighWire Press Free Full-Text Science Archives (http://highwire.stanford.edu/). This Stanford University website offers more than 160,000 free full-text articles on a large variety of scientific subjects.

  • M-Bed(sm): Embedded Multimedia in Electronic Journals (http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/M-Bed.htm). This site is maintained by the Science and Technology Librarian at Iowa State University. It is a registry of electronic journals that have integrated multimedia within the text of their associated articles. Common types of multimedia include audio and video files as well as two-dimensional and 3-D models, and supplemental datasets. Many free full-text articles on a variety of science topics are available.

  • National Academy Press (http://www.nap.edu/topics.php?topic=278). Although this is a commercial site which will try to sell you books, they also provide quite a few full-text books online that can be viewed for free. Most of the sciences are represented to some extent.
