JUVENILE BOOKS
There are 3 classes of juvenile books in the collection : Easy (through 3rd grade), Young Adult Fiction ( 4th grade and above) and Nonfiction ( all levels).
Procedures for Juvenile Books:
1. Search the catalog to determine if the title is already held.
2. Check catalog for other titles by the same author if all the titles need to be shelved together.
3. Search for title in OCLC
a. make sure record is for the same edition
b. edit record as necessary.
c. Call number is in field 090
for Easy Books : use prefix YE1 + author’s last name, first 2
letters of first word in title, and year.
[may need a 3rd letter of first title word or 1st
letter of second word if library holds other
books by the author]

for Juvenile Nonfiction is based on Dewey classification.
all nonfiction except biographies:
prefix Y + Dewey number, space, period, 1st
letter of author’s last name (for collections use
1st letter of title) + cutter number space

for biographies: If there are other holdings about the
person in the juvenile nonfiction section, use that
cutter number.
The cutter
number is based on the subject’s last
name. The final part of the call number is the 1st
letter of the author’s last name.
Ex. Doreen Rappaport’s Martin’s Big Words, a
books about Martin Luther King, Jr.

Unique Procedures for Juvenile Books:
Easy Books - Trace illustrator in Field 700
Young Adult Fiction – Illustrators generally are not traced. If subject
headings are used, they should have subdivision denoting
juvenile fiction.
Juvenile Nonfiction – Library of Congress subject headings are used.
